Background
The late Richard Wagamese is known as one of Canada’s most accomplished First Nations authors winning numerous awards and accolades for his 15 books. This was his last book.
Challenge
The publisher wanted to create a book of meditations that was visually playful yet poetic, and that would have masculine appeal. We also found that when it came time to typeset the book, there were only a couple of shorter one-line meditations that we were relying on as major visual elements.
Solution
To maintain the original visual concept of the book, I identified phrases within the author’s writing that spoke to and inspired me, and ran with my interpretations illustrating how they made me feel through typography.
Results
This book became a bit more personal and was an honour to work on. It was also wonderful to learn that it won the Bill Duthie Booksellers’ Choice Award.
